Antigen kit shortage at Nepalgunj border raises COVID-19 risk

Banke: COVID-19 testing at the Jamunaha border crossing in Nepalgunj has been halted due to a shortage of antigen kits, raising concerns about a potential surge in infections.

The Jamunaha checkpoint, a major entry point for Lumbini, Karnali, and parts of Sudurpaschim Province, sees 5 thousand to 8 thousand daily visitors to India’s Rupaydiha market, along with thousands more crossing for work and medical care.

Despite health staff being stationed at the border, only malaria, TB, and HIV tests are being conducted. COVID-19 testing has been suspended due to a lack of kits.

Health Desk In-charge Sunita Maurya called the situation “alarming” amid rising infections in India. Repeated requests have been made to the provincial and federal governments for supplies.

Lumbini Health Directorate officials say kits will be distributed within a week.

Meanwhile, experts warn that the lack of testing at the border poses a silent threat of community transmission.
