KUSOED launches Environment and Social Learning Centre on World Environment Day

June 5, Kathmandu: On the occassion of World Environment Day on Thursday, Kathmandu University School of Education (KUSOED) launched the Environment and Social Learning Centre (ESLC) in Hattiban, Lalitpur, unveiling its plaque during an event attended by educationists, environmental activists, development partners, civil society, private sector representatives, students, and policymakers.

Supported by the World Bank, the ESLC aims to strengthen Nepal’s capacity in environmental and social (E&S) risk management by building professional competencies in environmental protection, social safeguards, climate adaptation, and stakeholder engagement, according to KUSOED Dean Prof. Dr. Bal Chandra Luitel.

The initiative will deliver inclusive, high-quality training aligned with national and international E&S standards, incorporating curricula with case studies, field visits, and safeguard tools, as shared by Dr. Suresh Gautam, Chair of ESLC Working Group.

World Bank’s Gloria Malia Mahama emphasised that ESLC will address Nepal’s environmental and social challenges by enhancing legal, regulatory, and institutional frameworks through multi-stakeholder collaboration.

Associate Professor Dr. Lina Gurung noted that ESLC would promote the narrative that protecting the environment is development, while also guiding projects to mitigate E&S risks and impacts.
