Women in Sunwal thrive in wood apple (bel) juice production

May 28, Kathmandu: Women of the Bishasay Community Forest User Group in Sunwal-6 of West Nawalparasi are excelling in producing juice from wood apple, known as bel in Nepali. Since 2009, the group has utilised wood apple (bel) fruit from the 614-hectare forest, which also supports broom grass, amla, bamboo, and fodder programs.
Chairperson Ganga Ghimire leads the initiative, providing part-time jobs to around 20 women. Secretary Rupa Pathak reported high demand for wood apple juice in large markets such as Butwal, Narayanghat, and Kathmandu. The group produces 5,000 bottles yearly but faces challenges like limited raw materials, storage issues, and low awareness.
Karnabahadur Sen, chairperson of the Community Forest User Federation, Sunwal, commended the income-generating efforts but noted insufficient support from local authorities. Though the Division Forest Office provided machinery, further aid is needed. This initiative empowers women, supports forest conservation, and boosts local income, with potential for greater impact with increased support.
