Disaster management becoming challenging
Morang, May 21: Chief Minister of Koshi Province, Hikmat Kumar Karki, has said that disaster management is becoming more challenging in the country.
On the second day of the “Koshi Province Integrated Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Exercise Haatemalo 7”, organised by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law and managed by the Eastern Regional Headquarters Sunsari, a preliminary drill for earthquake and fire risk reduction was conducted today at the Jutmill Ground in Biratnagar.
In the program, Chief Minister Karki highlighted that the negative impacts of climate change, along with weaknesses and errors during development and construction, are making disaster management increasingly challenging these days. He emphasised the need to prioritise the lives and property of the people and manage risks during disasters.
Chief Minister Karki also stated that the provincial government will create policies and laws to foster a sense of responsibility among citizens for disaster management and will organise awareness programs and allocate necessary resources to combat it.
He informed that the provincial government has started constructing the ‘Koshi Province Disaster Management Centre’ in Arjundhara, Jhapa, and Rangeli, Morang, with the support of modern technology, trained security personnel, and local bodies.
The two-day exercise involved the participation of 90 people, including members of the Nepali Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Nepal Red Cross Society, Nepal Scouts, and civil service employees.
