Govt to forward green hydrogen potential: Minister Khadka

Kathmandu: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Dipak Khadka, has said the government was planning to forward the potential of green hydrogen with the formulation of work procedures.

During a meeting with Kathmandu University professors at the ministry on Thursday, Minister Khadka said green hydrogen has a huge role in reducing carbon emissions, so the government was for preparing a work procedure on it. “Green hydrogen is a tremendous opportunity for Nepal in terms of energy production, so the government is serious about taking this issue ahead,” he informed the intellectuals.

According to him, the green hydrogen is instrumental in achieving national ambition on net-zero carbon emissions and environmental protection.

During the discussion, Energy Secretary Suresh Acharya shared that a task force was formed to research the potential of the alternative fuel sources in Nepal.

Taskforce member and joint secretary Jibachh Mandal viewed green hydrogen was produced successfully in different parts of world in recent years, and Nepal too has its potentials.

Prof Dr Biraj Sing Thapa looking after Green Hydrogen Lab of Kathmandu University suggested the government that it immediately promoted the renewable hydrogen because its production was internationally less costly than the grey hydrogen- the fossil fuels. India, Japan, Korea and the UAE have already brought this technology in practice.
