Social media will be shut down if not registered by mid-April: Communication Minister Gurung

Rupandehi: Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has issued a firm warning to social media companies operating in Nepal without official registration.

Speaking at a program in Rupandehi, Minister Gurung stated that platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly known as Twitter), and YouTube will face shutdown if they fail to register with the Nepal government by mid-April.

He emphasized that the move aims to curb the increasing number of scams being perpetrated via social media platforms.

Highlighting global practices, he added, “Social media platforms are registered and pay taxes in many countries, including our neighbor India. They must do the same here in Nepal. It’s time they fulfill their responsibilities toward the Nepali state as well.”

Minister Gurung clarified that the government’s intention is not to shut down online media outlets in general. “There is a misconception that online news media will also be regulated or shut down. This is not true. The constitutionally guaranteed freedom of the press will remain protected,” he assured.

The minister also revealed that the government is preparing to introduce several media-related bills, including one concerning the Press Council. Discussions are ongoing to resolve issues related to the appointment of the Council’s chairperson.

Additionally, a bill focused on cybersecurity is being finalized and is expected to be tabled in the upcoming session of Parliament. A comprehensive Mass Communication Bill is also in the works, aimed at organizing media operations and ensuring that working journalists receive fair compensation.
