Marsyangdi Hydropower Plant produces only 30 megawatts out of potential 69 megawatts
April 12, Kathmandu: The Marsyangdi Hydropower Plant in Aabukhaireni, Tanahun, generates just 30 megawatts (MW) now. Its full capacity is 69 MW. A prolonged dry season has reduced water flow in the Marsyangdi River.
Chief engineer Pashupati Gautam said no rain fell this winter. A long drought cut production to 40 percent. The plant should produce 40 MW, but it has only reached 31 MW now.
The plant started in 1989. It has three 23 MW turbines. Its electricity goes to Bharatpur and Kathmandu for the national grid.
Gautam added that tributaries and streams have dried up. He expects more snowmelt and rain after mid-April. This should increase production.
Low output forces Nepal to import electricity from India. The Marsyangdi River flows from the Himalayas. Less snowmelt and no rain reduce water levels and power generation.
