Accompanied by embassy representatives, Ambassador Maeda began his visit with a stop at the renowned Gahwa Mai Temple in Birgunj on Wednesday morning.
He then proceeded to Ghadiarwa Pond and observed the ongoing renovation of Birgunj’s historic Clock Tower. Following this, he visited the Birgunj Metropolitan City office, where Mayor Rajesh Man Singh warmly welcomed him. During the meeting, the two discussed potential cooperation for the development of Birgunj’s historical, religious, and tourist sites, according to the mayor’s secretariat.
Parsa’s Chief District Officer, Ganesh Aryal, stated that Ambassador Maeda visited Birgunj for work-related purposes, including matters concerning the Birgunj Metropolitan City and to inspect various religious sites in the area.
The historic Clock Tower in Birgunj holds special significance due to its connection with Japan. Over five decades ago, the four clocks installed in the tower were purchased and donated by Japanese students who saved their poacked money for the cause. With the structure falling into disrepair over time, Japan has shown keen interest in supporting its reconstruction, reflecting the emotional bond tied to this landmark.
