NC general convention before election: General Secretary Thapa

Tulsipur, April 6: General Secretary of the Nepali Congress, Gagan Thapa, has said the NC will have its general convention before the next general election.

Addressing the first convention of the Nepal Tharu Association at Tulsipur on Sunday, General Secretary Thapa viewed that the party holds the general convention on time as per statute.

“The constitution, law and party statute mandate the party general convention before the next general election, 2084. Anyone advocating for the general convention after 2084 BS was against the law and party statute,” he made it clear.

According to him, the next election would be fought on its own, without forging an electoral alliance with any political party. He underlined the need to amend the party statute to give authority to the concerned district chapter of the party to finalize the election candidates in the respective constituencies.

“It is not true that a party becomes strong when its leader is strong. Party becomes robust only when the cadres are strong,” he reminded, reiterating that Dang district- not Kathmandu- should be able to pick the electoral candidate.

On a different note, the General Secretary observed the constitutional monarchy can not be revived at all. It must be clear to all that the present republic system should be enforced effectively to fulfill people’s aspirations. Some problems in elections could be corrected with amendments in the constitution, he suggested.

In his opinion, disenchantment in youth could be addressed with pro-public activities. Those wielding power need to correct their behavior to create an atmosphere favorable to youths, Thapa underscored.
