President Paudel urges responsible use of constitutional rights at Radio Nepal Diamond Jubilee
April 2, Kathmandu: President Ramchandra Paudel has emphasized that while exercising the rights granted by the constitution, the democratic culture and values it envisions must not be forgotten.
Speaking at the diamond jubilee celebration of Radio Nepal on Wednesday, he stressed that the people’s will remains paramount in a democracy and that deviating from the constitution’s intent and spirit would be unacceptable to Nepali citizens.
He highlighted that the constitution, forged through years of struggle and sacrifice, guarantees every citizen the right to express dissent, which he described as a beautiful aspect of federal democratic republicanism. However, he cautioned that responsibility is equally crucial when utilizing this right.
President Paudel also condemned violence, arson, and vandalism in the name of freedom, asserting that such acts are strictly prohibited. He expressed confidence that all stakeholders would remain vigilant to prevent such incidents.
Reflecting on recent events in Kathmandu, he expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, including that of a promising journalist, and the damage to property. He praised the significant role of journalists and media in Nepal’s democratic movement, noting that the constitution ensures full press freedom to uphold this responsibility.
Additionally, he lauded Radio Nepal’s contributions to informing citizens and preserving Nepal’s inclusive character, especially during crises like the 2015 earthquake and the COVID-19 pandemic.
