Judges should dispense justice wisely: Chief Justice Raut
Kathmandu, March 10: Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut has stated that judges should perform their duties judiciously.
Inaugurating the Second Conference of Women Judges-2081, organized on the occasion of International Day of Women Judges today, he emphasized that judges should carry out their responsibilities with respect for the judiciary’s prestige and dignity.
“While taking pride in the presence of women judges, it is important to focus on fair justice and making prudent decisions. Judges must work with the dignity and prestige of the court in mind so that those seeking justice receive it,” the Chief Justice said.
He expressed the belief that while women judges juggle responsibilities at home, with their families, and in delivering justice, success will surely follow if they work diligently.
Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice, Sushila Karki, stated that the number of women judges has been increasing over the last three years and stressed the importance of enhancing their capacity, courage, and education.
She emphasized the need for women judges to be competent in making judicial decisions without fear.
The senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, Sapana Pradhan Malla, said the presence of women judges is crucial, although she noted that sensitivity in delivering justice is not exclusive to women judges. She highlighted the need for women judges to focus more on capacity building and education.
Supreme Court Judge and Judges Society Chair Til Prasad Shrestha remarked that such conferences are essential for enhancing the quality of justice and facilitating its execution.
General Secretary of Judges Society Nepal, Tek Narayan Kunwar, explained that the conference aimed to discuss women’s participation in the judicial sector and gender equality within the judiciary.
A total of 60 participants, including 50 women judges and 10 former chief justices and judges, are attending the conference.
On the occasion, Chief Justice Raut honored former Chief Justice Karki for her contributions to the judicial sector.
Discussions are ongoing on various issues related to inclusiveness in the judiciary, the representation of women judges, as well as challenges and opportunities.
