Democracy Day being celebrated today

Kathmandu: Democracy Day is celebrated as the National Day every year on the 7th of the Nepali month Falgun.

It commemorates the day on which the nearly 104-year-old autocratic Rana oligarchy was overthrown and democracy established through a people’s revolution.

It was the day when the Nepali people secured their civic rights and freedom of speech, expression and right to organize and live a free life.

This was also the day when the process of ensuring the rule of law was initiated.

As a result of the struggle and sacrifices of the Nepali people, the Rana regime ended on Falgun 7, 2007 B.S. beginning a new era of democracy.

Shukraraj Shastri, Gangalal Shrestha, Dasharath Chand, Dharmabhakta Mathema and others sacrificed their lives to liberate Nepalis from autocratic rule.

Every year, Falgun 7 of the Nepali calendar is commemorated as the National Democracy Day in Nepal.
