Nepal to export processed buffalo meat worth $1.5 billion annually to China
December 16, Kathmandu: Nepal has agreed to export processed buffalo meat worth USD 1.5 billion annually to China. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Nepal’s Himalayan Food International and China’s Shanghai Ziyan Food Company Limited during a ceremony in Kathmandu on Monday.
Under this agreement, Himalayan Food International will export 2.7 million metric tonnes of buffalo meat annually in the initial phase. To facilitate this, a fully automated animal slaughterhouse is planned for construction within the next six months.
Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Ramnath Adhikari, emphasized Nepal’s commitment to meeting Chinese standards for meat exports, stating, “We are making efforts to ensure export of quality products by ensuring quality production of Nepal products.” He also pledged to implement necessary laws and policies to promote animal husbandry in Nepal.
Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Chen Song, expressed satisfaction with the agreement, highlighting its potential to provide economic relief to thousands of farmers in Nepal’s rural areas by creating a reliable market for buffalo meat exports.
This development follows a protocol signed during Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s recent visit to China, aimed at facilitating the export of thermally processed buffalo meat from Nepal.
