12 percent of households have at least one widow
Lalitpur, Dec. 2: The National Statistics Office (NSO) has released a survey stating that 12 percent of the total households in the country have at least one widow.
In a brief report entitled ‘Widow in Nepal’ based on the data from the National Census-2021, it is stated that 12 percent of the total households have at least a widow while two percent of households have a single woman except that the widow.
Likewise, 14 percent of households in Sudurpaschim Province have at least a widow while 11 percent of households in Karnali Province have such a figure.
The report has defined a single woman as a woman who has never married until 35 years or above or is a widow, divorced, or separated.
The report has also separately analyzed the status of single women and widows.
The report was prepared by the NSO and a team of experts from the Central Department of Population Studies of Tribhuvan University in collaboration with Women for Human Rights (WHR).
On the occasion, Member of the National Human Rights Commission and founding chair of WHR, Lily Thapa, said that further research was needed based on the current report.
