Kathmandu, Sept 28:<\/strong> Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Geeta Chaudhary has said Nepal will strengthen mountain diplomacy to present its voice on climate justice more effectively in international forums, including the upcoming COP-31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Addressing a seminar on \u2018Mountain Diplomacy for Climate Justice\u2019 on Sunday, Minister Chaudhary said the issue of climate justice was important not only for Nepal but also for mountainous and low-lying coastal countries and the global community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She said the Himalayas are a vital life-support system for the planet, providing water, ecosystems, agricultural resources and livelihoods to billions of people beyond Nepal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to Minister Chaudhary, mountains are increasingly exposed to climate-related hazards, including floods, landslides, glacier-related disasters and accelerated glacier melt. She said climate change is severely affecting the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She stressed the need for greater cooperation among Himalayan countries to make their collective voice stronger in international climate negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Although Nepal contributes less than 0.1 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, the country is facing severe consequences of climate change, she said, describing the situation as an issue of climate injustice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe are not seeking sympathy; we are demanding climate justice and accountability,\u201d Minister Chaudhary said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Referring to the devastating Bhotekoshi flood, she said the priority should be the people affected by disasters. She stressed the need for continued search and rescue operations, adequate assistance, shelter, health services and safe recovery and rehabilitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She also called for international assistance to reach affected communities without adding further financial pressure to a country already suffering extensive damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Minister Chaudhary said reconstruction efforts should give priority to children, women and persons with disabilities, while restoring roads, bridges, schools, health facilities and hydropower projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She further emphasized the need for safer development plans, stronger early-warning systems and disaster-resilient infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Highlighting the importance of regional cooperation in disaster monitoring, early warning and preparedness, Minister Chaudhary called for the establishment of a Himalayan Climate Resilience Mechanism<\/strong> involving China, Nepal and India. She said the proposal was also in line with Prime Minister Balendra Shah\u2019s remarks at the United Nations General Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She urged countries with greater historical responsibility for greenhouse gas emissions and greater financial resources to provide support for recovery and to strengthen the disaster resilience of vulnerable countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Minister Chaudhary also stressed the need to strengthen Nepal\u2019s capacity through climate-responsive budgets, climate-smart infrastructure, locally tailored risk information and nature-based solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She said climate justice should be understood as a right rather than a privilege, arguing that climate finance should be viewed as a responsibility towards countries and communities facing disproportionate climate impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe challenges facing the mountains are not just Nepal\u2019s; they concern the entire world,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Kathmandu, Sept 28: Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Geeta Chaudhary has said Nepal will strengthen mountain diplomacy to present its voice on climate justice more effectively in international forums, including the upcoming COP-31.
