Kathmandu, Sept. 25:<\/strong> The 40-megawatt Rahughat Hydropower Project in Myagdi has been connected to Nepal\u2019s national power transmission system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The project, developed by Raghuganga Hydropower Limited, a subsidiary of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), is located in Raghuganga Rural Municipality of Myagdi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Both units of the project, each with a capacity of 20 megawatts, have started generating electricity and were connected to the national grid on Wednesday. The electricity is being transmitted through the Kaligandaki Corridor 220-kV transmission line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As per the power purchase and sale agreement between Raghuganga Hydropower Limited and the NEA, the project will now undergo trial production. Commercial electricity generation is expected to begin after a 15-day testing period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NEA Executive Director and Chairman of Raghuganga Hydropower Limited\u2019s Board of Directors, Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha, said the project was completed despite difficult geographical conditions, the COVID-19 pandemic and flood-related challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He said the project would help meet peak electricity demand during the dry season, as it can operate at full capacity for around four hours in the evening when electricity demand is high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The project is expected to generate around 247.9 million units of electricity annually, with approximately 34 percent of its annual energy generation coming during the dry season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The estimated cost of the project, excluding interest during the construction period, is Rs. 9.17 billion. It has been financed through investments by the Government of Nepal and the NEA, along with a concessional loan secured through a line of credit from India’s Exim Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Indian contractor Jaiprakash Associates (JP) was awarded the civil construction contract worth around Rs. 6 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The initial agreement was signed on November 17, 2017, with a 45-month completion deadline. However, the project faced repeated delays, leading to extensions in February 2022 and June 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The deadline was extended for a third time in July 2025, with November 27, 2025, set as the revised completion target.
