{"id":436171,"date":"2026-09-17T14:36:24","date_gmt":"2026-09-17T08:51:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/radionepalonline.com\/en\/?p=436171"},"modified":"2026-09-17T14:40:28","modified_gmt":"2026-09-17T08:55:28","slug":"climate-change-played-role-in-nepal-tibet-floods-world-weather-attribution-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/radionepalonline.com\/en\/2026\/09\/17\/436171.html","title":{"rendered":"Climate change played role in Nepal-Tibet floods: World Weather Attribution study"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Kathmandu:<\/strong> A new study has found that human-induced climate change likely contributed to the glacier collapse that triggered devastating floods along the Nepal-Tibet border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BBC cited the World Weather Attribution study as saying the disaster was a compound event involving rising temperatures, thinning glaciers, thawing permafrost and existing geological weaknesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Friederike Otto, a climatologist at Imperial College London and a co-author of the study, said there was \u201cabsolutely no doubt\u201d that human-induced climate change played a role in preconditioning the disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientists had previously linked the floods to the collapse of a glacier slope near Langtang Lirung in Nepal&#8217;s Himalayas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study says temperatures in the area during July and August were around 1.5 degrees Celsius higher due to human influence on the climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glaciers in the region have also been thinning by about half a metre a year, potentially weakening existing fractures and increasing instability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heavy snowfall in October and November last year added to the amount of meltwater earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study says these factors may have interacted and amplified the disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, researchers stressed that climate change was not the sole cause.
