Kathmandu:<\/strong> Search, rescue and relief operations continue extensively across areas devastated by the August 26 Bhotekoshi flood as 12 days have elapsed since the disaster struck. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities are still working hard to reach the missing, recover bodies and restore vital infrastructure ravaged by the catastrophic disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The unprecedented disaster has caused a heavy loss of lives and property and displaced large numbers of people in districts including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Chitwan and Dhading. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

House, buildings, roads, bridges, hydropower structures and other critical have been damaged in the districts. The government says that it has mobilized all available resources for search and rescue operation and relief distribution and rehabilitation actions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the wake of the disaster, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority along with the security forces; Nepali Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force, are joining forces for effective disaster response efforts. Provincial and local governments are also coordinating efforts with concerned agencies to promptly carry out the post-disasters operations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Towards this, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has been coordinating continuously with domestic agencies, neighbouring countries and international development partners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tunnel rescue teams from India, China and South Korea are relentlessly working alongside the Nepali Army and other security forces, while drones, load carriers, rescue equipment and other supplies provided by friendly countries and international partners are being mobilized in the operations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the MoFA, an 11-member Malaysian disaster assistance and rescue team equipped with nine high-capacity drones arrived in Nepal last Saturday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The security forces and rescue teams have so far rescued altogether 13,104 people, including more than 300 foreign nationals, said the MoFA. However, an estimated 1,000 people remain missing, among them around 600 foreign nationals from 35 countries, according to the MoFA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities have so far recovered 1,341 bodies from the flood-affected areas. Efforts are also underway to restore roads, electricity and telecommunications and ensure relief reaches affected communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nepali Army engineers are constructing a temporary bridge over the Tadi River to restore the Galchhi-Trishuli road. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, two ropeways have also been brought into operation at Trishuli Indrenighat and Devighat. A preliminary Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment (RDNA) estimates that 32,933 people from 7,570 households have been affected by the disaster. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, forty-eight government offices, 55 KMs of roads, 37 motorable bridges and 68 suspension bridges have been damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The disaster has also affected around 1,806 hectares of farmland, 13 hydropower projects, one solar power plant and two transmission lines, disrupting an hydro power project of estimated 783 megawatt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) is being conducted alongside the initial assessment to determine the full scale of damage and the cost of reconstruction and recovery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, authorities have begun temporary management of recovered bodies after completing necessary forensic procedures, paving the way for identification and eventual handover to families for final rites. Forensic teams from India, China, Japan, Singapore and the Republic of Korea are assisting Nepal Police and other agencies with DNA profiling, analysis and identification of the deceased. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MoFA has so far facilitated 26 flights carrying relief materials and rescue teams from friendly countries and international organizations. It is also coordinating with Chinese authorities to help Nepali citizens affected by the disaster return home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of Saturday, 431 Nepalis had returned through the Tatopani border, with another 105 expected to cross on Sunday, said the Ministry. The Ministry has deployed Deputy Chief of Protocol, Prem Raj Gautam, to the operation centre in the affected area to coordinate assistance for foreign nationals involved in the disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the search continues, the scale of the tragedy remains immense-but so does the effort to bring survivors home, identify the missing and help devastated communities begin the long road to recovery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
