{"id":431925,"date":"2026-06-30T18:37:05","date_gmt":"2026-06-30T12:52:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/radionepalonline.com\/en\/?p=431925"},"modified":"2026-06-30T18:54:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T13:09:12","slug":"social-media-accounts-for-most-misinformation-during-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/radionepalonline.com\/en\/2026\/06\/30\/431925.html","title":{"rendered":"Social media accounts for most misinformation during elections"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Kathmandu:<\/strong> Research has shown that social media accounted for most misinformation spread during the House of Representatives elections held on March 5. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"342\" height=\"365\" src=\"https:\/\/radionepalonline.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/CMR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-431926\" style=\"width:785px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/radionepalonline.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/CMR.jpg 342w, https:\/\/radionepalonline.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/CMR-281x300.jpg 281w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 342px) 100vw, 342px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a research report by the Centre for Media Research (CMR), social media accounted for the most misinformation, that is, 87 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research also revealed that Facebook is the biggest carrier of misinformation among the social networking platforms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most misinformation carriers were artificial intelligence (AI)-generated materials. Some of these videos or materials were also found to be fabricated and with a distorted context. Completely fictional or artificial content was created, old footage was used to create new events, and scenes were created as if the event had happened in reality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Releasing the research report, Executive Director Tilak Pathak said that even though the fact-checking of the media content was done, it was more challenging because the fact-checkers did not have enough AI recognition tools, while edited videos were used. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research found that the efforts made by Election Commission, civil society, the media, political parties and candidates themselves on fact-checking were insufficient.
