Biratnagar, April 18: A digital training hub aimed at strengthening eye care services has been launched at Biratnagar Eye Hospital, marking a major step toward modern medical education in Nepal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The facility has been established by Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh in partnership with Orbis International, and is operated under the Lahan Eye and Ear Health Care System. It was inaugurated on Thursday by Koshi Province Health Minister Man Bahadur Limbu and Orbis President and CEO Kathleen A. Sherwin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first facility of its kind in the country, the hub introduces technology-driven training, moving beyond traditional teaching methods. It is equipped with surgical simulators, wet lab facilities, virtual learning tools, and Cybersight-based tele-mentoring, allowing doctors and health professionals to improve their skills in a safe and controlled environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The programme will involve eye hospitals, medical colleges, and professionals from both public and private sectors in Nepal, along with participants from international organisations. Training sessions will be led by experienced global experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials say the hub is expected to enhance healthcare capacity and promote medical education tourism by attracting foreign trainees, reducing the need for costly training abroad. It is also expected to position Biratnagar Eye Hospital as a regional and international training centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Chief Administrator Sudhir Thakur, the system operates two hospitals and over 40 eye care centres, providing services across urban and remote areas. In 2025, it delivered more than 1.4 million services, including over 132,000 surgeries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The inauguration was attended by senior officials and medical professionals, including Prof. Dr Chet Raj Pant and other representatives.
