Kathmandu, April 12: The Nepal Medical Association (NMA) has expressed concern over the government\u2019s directive to operate outpatient department (OPD) services on Sundays, saying it would be difficult to implement due to a shortage of medical staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Ministry of Health and Population had instructed all health institutions to ensure uninterrupted services despite the implementation of a two-day weekly holiday, directing hospitals to manage workloads and continue OPD services on Sundays as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the NMA has urged the ministry to reconsider the decision, stating that maintaining OPD services on Sundays would add pressure on an already overburdened health workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The association said doctors are already engaged in round-the-clock duties, including emergency services, on-call responsibilities, and regular ward rounds, in addition to routine working hours. It argued that enforcing Sunday OPD services without adequate staffing would be unjust and impractical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, several hospitals have issued differing notices regarding the implementation of the two-day weekly leave system. Institutions such as Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Manmohan Cardiothoracic Vascular and Transplant Centre, and Karnali Academy of Health Sciences have decided to suspend OPD services on Sundays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the other hand, hospitals including Rapti Academy of Health Sciences, Bir Hospital, National Trauma Centre, and Bharatpur Hospital have announced that they will continue OPD services on Sundays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
