Kathmandu, Nov 8<\/em> \u2014 Nepal has officially secured its membership in the International Astronomical Union (IAU), the world\u2019s leading organisation in the field of astronomy, following years of persistent efforts by the country\u2019s scientific community.<\/p>\n

The Nepal Astronomical Society (NASO) will represent Nepal within the IAU, NASO President Suresh Bhattarai confirmed. He said the recognition validates the work undertaken in Nepal since 2007 to promote astronomy education, research, and outreach.<\/p>\n

During the 32nd General Assembly of the IAU held in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2024, Nepal was initially granted observer status. NASO project coordinator Manisha Dwa represented Nepal at the assembly and delivered a presentation on behalf of the organisation.<\/p>\n

President Bhattarai shared that the official confirmation of Nepal\u2019s recognition as a national member was received through an email from IAU President and Nobel laureate in Physics (2011), Prof. Brian P. Schmidt. The message stated that, following discussions and correspondence, the IAU Executive Committee had chosen NASO as Nepal\u2019s national member, representing the entire astronomical community of the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a proud moment for the Nepali scientific community,\u201d said Bhattarai, adding that the membership will strengthen Nepal\u2019s participation in global astronomy, foster international collaboration, and open new avenues in space research.<\/p>\n

He further stated that NASO is committed to voicing Nepal\u2019s interests in the global astronomy arena and expanding opportunities for education and research in the field. Since its establishment in 2007, NASO has been leading initiatives to promote scientific literacy and public engagement in astronomy across Nepal.<\/p>\n

The IAU membership marks a significant milestone for Nepal, offering greater access to international cooperation, scientific knowledge exchange, and capacity building in astronomy and space science.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
