July 19, Kathmandu:<\/strong> National Planning Commission Vice-Chair Prof. Dr. Shivraj Adhikari emphasised that Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) must be implemented based on local needs, knowledge, and priorities. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking as a keynote speaker at the 2025 SDG Localisation Partnership Forum in New York, he stated that education, health, employment, and poverty reduction are interconnected, requiring integrated local efforts for lasting change.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The NPC Vice Chair highlighted Nepal\u2019s three-tier federal structure\u2014federal, provincial, and local governments. He noted that local governments, being closest to citizens, can best understand community needs, respond quickly, and build trust. He said the National Planning Commission is developing strategies, providing guidance, monitoring progress, and enhancing capacity at all levels to support SDG implementation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He mentioned tools like the 2021 SDG Localisation Implementation Guideline and the 2022 SDG Coding Resource Book. Nepal showcased its commitment through the 2024 Voluntary National Review. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Adhikari praised Chandragiri Municipality\u2019s Voluntary Local Review, supported by UN-Habitat, as a key achievement. It helps local governments measure SDG progress, plan strategies, identify challenges, and attract investment. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Vice Chair Adhikari stressed the need for more training, stronger local implementation, adequate funding, robust data systems, and technology transfer to address emerging challenges. He called for a stronger Partnership Forum to align Nepal\u2019s national vision with local actions and global cooperation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
