Ilam, March 11: Rong Rural Municipality in Ilam district has provided orientation to 121 leading farmers. These farmers, selected as ‘guru kisan’ (leading farmers) from among 4,500 farmers, received the first phase of training to help them focus on increasing productivity.<\/p>\n
Rural Municipality Chairman Mani Kumar Syangbo informed that the orientation was aimed at fostering competitiveness among the farmers in cultivation and production.<\/p>\n
The training focused on the farmers’ roles and responsibilities for better farming practices. The number of trained farmers would be gradually increased, as more farmers need additional skills and knowledge on agriculture, Rai added.<\/p>\n
The scheme, envisioned last year, will be formalized with the announcement of ‘guru kisan’ on March 20. According to Syangbo, it is the first of its kind in Nepal.<\/p>\n
One of the farmers attending the orientation, Man Bahadur Rai from Badare of Rong-1, shared that he produced 15 maan of black cardamom on 12 ropanis of land. “With proper irrigation and fertilizer, the yields will increase significantly even on a small area,” he said, adding that he plans to increase his production next year.<\/p>\n
Previously, many farmers in the area struggled to produce 10 maan of cardamom on as much as 30 ropanis of land.<\/p>\n
Vice Chairman of the rural municipality, Bishnu Maya Bhujel, mentioned that the orientation would not only make farmers more competitive but also help ensure the self-sufficiency of cash crops in the village.<\/p>\n
